September Business of the Month
HEBER CITY -- The Heber Valley Chamber of Commerce/Convention & Visitors Bureau named Watts Enterprises as the Business of the Month for September 2008. Founding owner, Russ Watts, started his construction and development business 32 years ago in Salt Lake City and is still headquartered there at 52 Highland Dr.
Watts Enterprises has three developments in Wasatch County. The first development, the Valais, opened in the late 1990s as a resort community. Dutch Fields, another Midway development, is single family home community. Most recently, Watts Enterprises constructed a condominium and town home development next to the Wasatch County Library in Heber City called Ranch Landing.
One could say Russ Watts was born to the business. His father was an architect and Watts grew up assisting his father, first as a handyman then working his way up to drafting and design. A graduate of the University of Utah, Watts began with small projects and custom built homes. He said he soon realized, however, that he wanted to be able to build more than homes – he wanted to build lifestyles.
This desire steered him toward designing and building community developments. “I want to create communities where people become neighbors,” Watts said. To do this, Watts incorporates gathering places within his developments. The Valais in Midway is an example of his success. He said lakes, pools, tennis courts, a clubhouse, equestrian trails and walking trails are attractive to residents and become part of their lifestyle.
“The number one amenity is trails,” he said. He said trails help turn developments into communities. He said the trail system at Valais is open to the public and is well used. “Everyone wants to walk the trails at Valais,” he said.
Watts and his two partners, Mike Nelson and Mike Tagliabu, pay attention to every detail in their developments. They conceptualize, design and build each development. “We care about everything,” Watts said.
There will be an open house for Watts Enterprises’ newest town home and condo development located on 500 East and 1200 South across from the Wasatch County Library. The open house is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Watts, who is a resident of Midway, said he was drawn to Wasatch County because of the mountains. He said, “I love it here. People wave to each other – that is the number one draw for me.”
