Enjoying the Long Weekend

Things to Do

Labor Day weekend may be the busiest weekend of the entire year for the Heber Valley—and with good cause. The sheer amount of events happening up here is amazing.

Swiss Days has been around for decades and celebrates Midway’s Swiss heritage with songs and dance and delicious food.  The park in the middle of town is filled for two days (August 30-31st) with vendors selling crafts, clothing, artwork , holiday decorations and just about anything else you could imagine.

Live music is performed at the pavilion and inside the Town Hall all day long. Don’t miss the 2013 Swiss Miss and her court’s program. There’s also the Swiss Day Parade down Main Street on Saturday morning, with a chuck wagon breakfast available to fill your belly while you wait for it to begin.

On the other end of Midway, at the same time as Swiss Days, is the world famous Soldier Hollow Classic—the largest sheepdog championship and festival in the world. Canine athletes come from around the world to Soldier Hollow's spectacular Olympic hills to match wits and athletic ability with wild'n wooly range Utah sheep.

In addition to the sheepdog trial championship the event features a host of other activities—canine acrobats, the Wild Wonders Animal Show, the high flying  and fun Splash Dogs Championship as well as delicious food representing the shepherding cultures of the world, traditional Scottish music performed by the Salt Lake Scots,  biathlon shooting, face painting and Dutch oven cooking.

The Festival runs from August 31st to September 3rd, with the final championship round happening on the last day. This is definitely fun for all ages.

When your legs get too tired to walk or stand anymore, take a rest and ride the Heber Valley Railroad’s  Swiss Days Special. It’s a 90 minute old-fashioned train ride with live entertainment on board. Trains depart on Friday and Saturday at 11am, 1:30pm, 4pm and 7pm. And with tickets only $10, it’s family friendly and affordable!

Be aware that between all these events and people heading to the mountains to camp, the campgrounds and hotels fill up and traffic is very heavy. So be sure to add extra time if you’re traveling, be patient and be safe. We wish everyone to have a wonderful , fun and safe long weekend!
