School has just started and you already need a long weekend and one last getaway before the grind of plays, soccer practice, homework, and playing chauffeur become your routine. You may be thinking about coming to Midway in the Heber Valley for the Labor Day weekend to see the famous Swiss Days or even the world renowned Soldier Hollow Classic Sheepdog Championship. Well, I have some insider tips for you on how to beat the crowds, where to eat, and what not to miss.
Swiss Days – August 29 & 30
FREE shuttles – Swiss Days attracts a lot of people, A LOT of people. Don’t bother with trying to find a parking spot, just take one of the free shuttle systems. They are convenient, quick, and you won’t be stressed out trying to find a spot.
Package Valet – Nothing is worse when you see another cute decoration for your kid’s room, but your hands are so full to carry even one more bag. Take advantage of the free package drop off at the Community Center. Your packages will be safe so you can shop, shop, shop!
Try the BBQ – Swiss Days is known just as much for the shopping as it is for the great food. If you’re around Saturday stick around for the BBQ dinner that starts at 4 pm. Yumm!
Leave Fido at home – Just a way of reminder, pets aren’t allowed. Leave your cuddly friends home and you’ll both be happy.
Soldier Hollow Classic - August 29 - September 1
Bring Sunscreen! –The weather forecast for the event looks pretty good right now. But it never hurts to have a little added protection from sunscreen. There are plenty of souvenirs to take home, but a sunburn isn’t one of them.
Buy Tickets online – Skip the lines at the door, buy your tickets online. Everyone who buys their tickets online not only gets the joy and satisfaction of passing people in line at the door, but also a free $10 poster at the event.
Plan on eating there – Speaking from experience, there are so many amazing food vendors at the Classic that you’ll be licking your chops to get a taste.
New Events! – This year in addition to the fan favorite splash dog competition two new events will be there for your viewing pleasure. Flyball and Agility. Flyball is a timed relay event in which two teams race through a series of obstacles the fastest. Agility is about speed and accuracy as dogs show their stuff.
Final tip – make a weekend of it and stay in Midway.
Last weekend my wife, two kids, and I all stayed at the Zermatt Resort in Midway and had a blast! If you have never stayed at the Zermatt, DO. The service is great and the rooms are comfortable, spacious, and beautiful. Plus the Zermatt has great amenities for the whole family.
My kids loved the carousel rides in the courtyard, we all enjoyed the awesome indoor/outdoor pool with two hot tubs and a waterfall. My wife loved the free fudge from the Homestead gift shop, and I loved the bucket of balls to Crater Springs Golf Course.
* Extra tip at no charge – The Zermatt and Homestead have free shuttle service to and from Swiss Days for guests.
Plan to come up to Miday in the Heber Valley for this Labor Day for Swiss Days and Soldier Hollow Classic, and stay for the weekend!
