Remember as a kid praying for a snow day when school was cancelled, and you had a glorious 24 hours all to your own imagination? Well, here’s a nod to those good old days with these “daycation” ideas to answer the age old question “what to do during the winter.”

Start it off with a full tummy.

Nothing ruins a perfectly good snow day as the “hangries.” Chicks Café has been a local breakfast favorite since before breakfast was cool. Step inside this throwback to the glory days of diners and you’re greeted with cozy booths and a coffee counter straight out of the movies.

What to order: Always get a scone. Chicks is famous for scones. After that let your tastes decide.

Get the heart rate up

Snowshoeing is a crazy combination of science and magic as you track over powder snow without getting stuck up to your knees. Take a quick hike, or a long stroll at Wasatch Mountain State Park. Right at the park you can rent snowshoes and be out on the trail in no time. If snowshoeing sounds easy trade in the clawed webbing for sleek cross-country skis. Also available a right from the visitor center.

Lunch time!

Fanny’s Grill at the Homestead Resort is a favorite for golfers just coming of the course. Lucky for us they are open all year round. Known for their burgers we suggest the Bacon Blue Cheese Burger. Bacon. Need we say more.

All Aboard!

During the winter months the Heber Valley can be blanketed with that world famous “Greatest Snow on Earth.”  Enjoy the beauty of the land aboard the Heber Valley Railroad. During November and December, you can experience an instant family tradition aboard the North Pole Express with Santa, singing, hot cocoa, elves and the works. During January and February slow down a bit with their two-hour scenic trains.

Our suggestion: Book the North Pole Express, you’ll love it!

Ice, Ice Baby

The 8th through 13th wonders of the world (because there are six of them throughout North America), the Ice Castle in Midway will awe and feel you with the joy of being a kid again. If winter is not your thing, the Ice Castles are one of those things that will change your mind. Millions of pounds of ice and thousands of LED lights create the best photo backdrop you'll see all winter. Dress warm with boots, gloves, snow pants, and warm coat.

Pro Tip: Go at dusk as the lights come on and the crowds are still small.
