Celebrating Innovation in Education: Wasatch CAPS Named May 2025 Business of the Month
The Heber Valley Chamber is proud to honor Wasatch CAPS (Center for Advanced Professional Studies) as the May 2025 Business of the Month, recognizing the program’s exceptional commitment to student development, business innovation, and community connection. At the helm of this groundbreaking program is Weston Broadbent, Career and Technical Education (CTE) Director for Wasatch County School District, whose leadership has helped transform the educational landscape in Heber Valley.
A Program Making a Real Difference
Founded in 2016, Wasatch CAPS bridges the gap between education and industry by giving high school students hands-on experience with real-world projects. From business and marketing to healthcare, engineering, software development, and environmental sciences, students immerse themselves in real life challenges—learning by doing and contributing to their community in meaningful ways.
Education that Drives Community Impact
Each semester, the program facilitates 50 to 60 diverse projects, involving up to 120 students. The scope and impact of these projects are quite impressive. Here is a sampling of some recent projects completed by Wasatch CAPS students:
Labrum Chevrolet teamed up with students for a marketing campaign to help them reach critical quarterly goals.
Midway Must-Haves Souvenir Shoppe, which launched in partnership with and oversight from Midway’s Mayor Celeste Johnson, began as a student project identifying visitor needs and creating a local solution.
Students supported the Heber City Council in the early planning, design, and fundraising stages for a new splash pad.
For over six years, Wasatch CAPS students have worked with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the Utah Department of Natural Resources to monitor and report on the ecological health of the Provo River.
These are just a few project examples of how Wasatch CAPS is creating long-lasting value—not just for the students, but for the whole valley.
A Strong Leader with Deep Local Roots
Weston Broadbent’s path to Wasatch CAPS is just as inspiring. With a background in real estate and development, Weston made a mid-career pivot to education, driven by a passion for meaningful connections and impact. His time is now spent working at the Wasatch High School, the CAPS location at UVU-Wasatch Campus, and the school district main office, where he oversees CTE programs across the valley.
Weston is deeply connected to the community—his grandparents were born in Wasatch County, one in historic Keetley, now beneath the waters of Jordanelle Reservoir. Today, he and his family call the hillsides of Midway home. He’s an avid outdoorsman, and when not in the classroom, you might find him camping, fishing, or trail running in the Wasatch Mountains.
How the Community Can Get Involved
Weston believes strongly in the power of partnership. Wasatch CAPS offers three key ways for local businesses and individuals to get involved:
1. Submit a project with a business problem students can help solve. 2. Become a mentor and share your expertise to guide the next generation. 3. Make a donation that directly supports scholarships administered through the Wasatch Education Foundation.
Participation is free—no cost for local businesses or professionals to take part. The return on investment is seen in student growth and real-world results.
Looking Ahead
With a second high school on the horizon, Weston sees even greater opportunities for Wasatch CAPS to expand. The vision is to connect students from both campuses in ways that enhance creativity, collaboration, and innovation unlike any other program in the region.
The Heber Valley Chamber is proud to celebrate Wasatch CAPS for not only redefining education, but also for serving as a catalyst for positive community change. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Weston Broadbent, his team, and the incredible students and all staff who make this program such a success.
