September 2022 Business of the Month: Wasatch Community Foundation

In 2000, a dedicated group of volunteers formed Wasatch Community Foundation to connect residents who were able to give with residents in need. The non-profit operated under the mission of a “from the community, for the community” mentality.

Today, Wasatch Community Foundation is a thriving 501c3, and the largest all-volunteer, non-profit organization in Heber Valley. Its vision is to continue building an extraordinary community by enabling families living here to enjoy a happy and healthy quality of life. The group’s mission is to advance the well-being of Wasatch County residents by uniting community resources and programs through the following five important pillars: Human Services, Health, Education, Recreation, and Arts.

The foundation is governed by a diverse and experienced group of local professionals and passionate residents working toward the same vision to enhance the quality of life for and overall well-being of local residents. Several of the Wasatch Community Foundation board members are associated with and hold committee positions with other area non-profits, including Rotary Club, Heber Valley Western Music and Cowboy Poetry Gathering, Wasatch Arts Foundation, CAMS (Community Alliance for Main Street), Midway Business Alliance, People’s Health Clinic, CCPC Heber, St. Lawrence Thrift Store, and others throughout the valley.

The Wasatch Community Foundation is working on an average of five or more projects under each of the five pillars – all with a focus on and purpose of enhancing the well-being of members in the community. Through its dedicated efforts, the foundation has made some huge impacts in the community over the years. Here are a few of the more recent projects of note: Heber City Dog Park renovations (sod, sprinkler system, water fountain, etc.), bike repair stations along area trails, and various types of sound and stage equipment donated for the local art groups in the community. And significant funds have been contributed to the Heber Valley Hospital Dialysis Center, Utah Valley University – Wasatch Campus, Wasatch Education Foundation, Wasatch Recreation Center, CCPC Heber, St. Lawrence Thrift Store, higher educational programming at UVU-Wasatch and MTEC (local campus), and financial and healthcare support totaling approximately $350,000 to residents during the pandemic. Ongoing community support is provided through annual events such as the Kid’s Health Clinic (offering dental services, immunizations, and wellness checkups to uninsured and underinsured families in the community), food drives for the local food bank, and Thanksgiving dinner and help for families struggling in our community.

Funds have grown over the years and since the foundation’s creation in 2000. But the local needs are still great. Wasatch Community Foundation is always seeking additional dollars to do more in our community. The board has a budgetary goal of $500,000 for the year, comprised of about $250,000 in grant funding and the other $250,000 in fundraising. As all positions, including board members, chair positions, and directors, are completely volunteer based, 100% of the funds raised or earned are put back into the community for specific projects that fall under one of the five pillars and align with the mission and vision of Wasatch Community Foundation. The organization has a bigger goal of creating a $1 million endowment fund and hopes to accomplish this in the coming years.

For those looking to donate to this wonderful non-profit, monetary donations can be made to the general fund or can be specified to be used for a specific pillar or project the foundation is currently working on. Donations to the general fund are ideal as it allows the board members and directors to determine the greatest area of need and utilize the funds accordingly. And for those wishing to get involved directly, the board is looking for additional members and there is always a need for more volunteers.
