One of my favorite Christmas movies is “Klaus” on Netflix. It’s a great retelling of the Santa Claus legend. In the movie, a postman is sent to a lonely, unwelcoming island inhabited by residents who carry a centuries-old grudge between two clans. As the show goes on the postman befriends a mysterious yet kind-hearted woodsman. Together, their efforts slowly create a positive change for the people of the island.
At one point in the show, the postman is dumbfounded by the changes happening on the island. (In fact, larceny is down 70 percent!) Klaus, the woodsman, then offers a sage bit of wisdom fit for the ages: “A true selfless act always sparks another.”
It is these small acts of selflessness that start to change the people of the island. They become kinder and more caring, and they become a community. Don’t worry, this is spoiler-free, so you should really go watch it. I may have to another time or two before the season is over. I have watched this show at least eight times, and that line always gets to me. I love the pure and simple truth of this idea. What really inspires me is the way kindness and selflessness spark community. I have lived in this valley for the past 12 years (I know, a newbie), and I have seen this valley grow. I believe what makes this community great isn’t necessarily the population size.
I think the true greatness of this community is the way we treat each other. It’s all the hundreds of “true selfless acts.” From donating time or money to a local charity to helping families in need to the many stories I hear every year of businesses stepping up to serve this community, there are many selfless acts that are sparking others. This is the Heber Valley Way, and it will continue to positively shape our valley. Just like in the show, selfless acts always inspire. It is my hope and plea that we all will choose to be that spark of goodwill and selfless service this holiday season and throughout the year.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from all of us at the Heber Valley Chamber!
