This week we held our “Meet the Candidates” Chamber Luncheon at the UVU-Wasatch Campus in Heber City. We had nine candidates from both Midway City and Heber City represented at the event. Seven in person and two pre-recorded due to prior scheduling conflicts.
The purpose of this lunch topic was to ask each of the candidates select questions to better understand how they think, why they are running for a Council member or Mayoral position, and what they might do to support local businesses. Many times, when it comes to local elections, we need to know more about how an elected official goes about making their choices rather than a specific stance on a particular topic. We learned about their life experiences that led them to run for office and some key principles they support for helping local businesses.
One of the many things I found interesting was when we asked the candidates what they love about the Heber Valley. Many of the responses tapped into a common answer—the people of this valley make it a special place. Each candidate mentioned how much he or she loved getting to know local residents, and how this community steps up to support one another in the good times and the bad.
These candidates, if elected, will have many tough choices in front of them. How to balance honoring our past while still moving forward? How to plan for major events and projects, from navigating new traffic corridors to helping prepare our valley for Olympic readiness? But through it all, if they, and all of us, keep a focus on policies that show we care for each other, it will be better for the community and businesses in Heber Valley.
