Border Collies, Sheep, food and oh, so much more

If you think the Soldier Hollow Classic is simply for shepherds then you would be mistaken. The classic is more than this, actually a whole lot more.

Hands down the main draw of the classic is to watch the handler and border collie become one as they masterfully guide the sheep through, over and around obstacles. It’s an amazing sight to behold to watch how all this is done with just the sound of whistles.

The classic is fun for the whole family. From kids young and old, there is always something new to take in. This year Mark Petersen, event director and founder, has added more things to see, taste and try.

Things to see

Fiber arts, pottery, jewelry, and leather crafts are just some of the great arts and crafts that will be demonstrated and display. Learn more about the Navajo culture and shepherding traditions as weavers and elders will be at the classic weaving beautiful rugs and tapestries.

Celebrate all things dog with the high-flying splash dogs, the K9 Kings Dog Show, and the agility dogs show. Each of these events show the remarkable abilities of man’s best friend. With multiple shows daily, take a moment or two to catch these dogs in action. You and your kids will have smiles on your faces as you watch these dogs play, jump and run for the crowd.

Things to Taste

Unlike traditional festivals that offer the same old burgers and fries, the Soldier Hollow Classic has the best “International Food Court” around. Vendors actually are vetted out so only the best food makes its way into the festival. You’ll be able to sample a host of flavors from around the world. Greek gyros and roasted lamb, Asian sliders, Mexican tacos and burritos, Britain’s classic fish and chips, the best of the west barbecue, Hawaiian home cooking, Canadian favorites, and the classic philly cheese steak. The best part is all vendors will offer kids meal for $5 or less. Feed the family and still have left over for the crafts.

Things to Try

Let the kids have a good time enjoying the many free games at the classic. There will be hula hoops, bean bag toss games, the lost sheep game, face painting, balloon artists, coloring contest (with free ice cream novelties to every entrant) and more. Even try milking the IFA cow for an old timey experience.

New this year

New this year are the Wild Wonders and Exotic Animal Show and Earthwings raptor exhibit. Wild Wonders features over 20 wilds and exotic rescued animals. This 45-minute show runs three times a day on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Earthwings is an up close and personal experience with some of the most amazing hawks, owls and falcons.

Also new this year to the classic is the Utah State Highland Championships. Celebrate more fun events and sport that have roots in the British Isles with the Highland Games Championships. You get to see the weight over bar, sheef toss, and the ever iconic caber toss.

The action starts Friday, September 1 at 8 am and runs through Monday. Get $2 off coupons at the Heber Valley Visitor Center at 475 N Main Monday thru Friday 9 am to 5 pm.
