Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital is donating 900 life jackets to Life Jacket Loaner Stations across the state to help keep families safe around water this summer.
With the Memorial Day holiday kicking off summer outdoor activities on Utah’s lakes and reservoirs, safety experts at Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital are issuing a reminder: life jackets and supervision are critical to keeping kids safe around the water.
Intermountain Primary Children’s has collaborated with local health and community agencies throughout the state to provide life jackets for various loaner stations for people getting out this summer to enjoy the water.
“Drowning is the second leading cause of preventable injury death for Utah children under age 14, with 70 percent of drowning deaths happening between May and August,” said Wing Province, MD, Intermountain Park City Hospital chief medical officer and emergency medicine physician.
News media are invited to see the stocking of the Loaner Vest Station at Jordanelle Reservoir, interview a family who nearly lost their mother in a near drowning, and physicians and community health caregivers hoping to increase the wearing of life jackets during water-based activities.
