Soldier Hollow Nordic Center and Heber Light & Power Partner to Provide 100% Renewable Energy for Venue
Midway, Utah (February 22, 2024) - Soldier Hollow Nordic Center is partnering with Heber Light & Power to utilize renewable energy sources for all electric power needs at the facility.
The renewable energy sources produced through the Clear Peaks Program will power 100% of Soldier Hollow’s electric power needs – from the snowmaking system, to lights on the Toyota tubing hill, to the newly renovated and expanded competition building set to host the international BMW IBU World Cup Biathlon event March 8-10.
“We are thrilled to partner with Heber Light & Power to ensure that Soldier Hollow’s energy needs are coming from renewable resources,” Soldier Hollow General Manager Luke Bodensteiner said. “Sustainability is a priority throughout winter sport and this initiative will benefit the Heber Valley community, the kids in our sports programs, and visitors from around Utah and the world.”
Heber Light & Power’s Clear Peaks program offers 100 kwh blocks for 90 cents per block. Every 10 blocks purchased represents a megawatt-hour of energy produced through a renewable resource. Heber Light & Power retires one renewable energy certificate for every megawatt of energy purchased under the Clear Peaks Program. The purchase of RECs stimulates growth and investment in green power sources, further reducing carbon emissions.
Each renewable energy certificate represents a specific amount of electricity produced and delivered into the power grid through a renewable resource. Currently, 45% of Heber Light & Power’s energy portfolio is produced through sustainable sources including hydro, solar, wind and thermal.
“Our partnership with Soldier Hollow is a tangible example of the benefit of the Clear Peaks program,” Heber Light & Power Customer & Community Relations Manager Jared Wright said. “We are proud to provide renewable energy to a facility that positively impacts the Heber Valley community.”
The partnership harmonizes with larger sustainability efforts in winter sport. The International Biathlon Union announced in September 2020 a sustainability policy and 10-year strategy to reduce 50% of the sport's emissions and become climate neutral by 2030.
